LX Story

Winter 2021

In 2021, Mallori Steele, the Founder of Black in L&D, identified a glaring gap: the underrepresentation of Black speakers in Learning and Development conferences. Determined to address this, she began planning the first Learning Exchange™.

Spring 2021

Mallori’s purpose for The Learning Exchange™ was twofold. Firstly, it aimed to give attendees the chance to see themselves reflected in the speakers, thereby encouraging and inspiring both personal and professional growth.

Secondly, it provided a nurturing space for first-time Black speakers, many of whom often miss out on such opportunities on other platforms.

Summer 2021

This virtual conference, held for the first time in August 2021, spotlighted Black professionals from various industries, offering them a platform to share their expertise and experiences. With eight sessions and approximately 200 registrants, the inaugural event was a testament to Mallori’s vision of creating a space where Black professionals could be seen, heard, and celebrated.

Summer 2023

By the time the second Learning Exchange™ rolled around in June 2023, its impact was undeniable.

The event boasted over 1,000 registrations, attendees from more than 30 countries, and a lineup of over 50 Black presenters, panelists, and moderators.

Mallori’s unwavering vision for The Learning Exchange™ has only expanded, with a dedicated team from Black in L&D volunteering their time, passion, and resources to bring this monumental event to life. The Learning Exchange™ ensures that Black voices are not just included but celebrated.
